Chapter 2

OUR DEMOCRACY HAS BEEN STOLEN

Many Canadians are being deceived – we think we have a democracy, but we really don’t. And many of us think that we have a free press, and for sure we don’t have that either. Personally I think that these two things are our biggest problems; our lack of democracy and our lack of a free press.

Many Canadians think we have a democracy, because this is what we’re always told by our media and our politicians. I don’t think we should believe these stories. I don’t think the government of Canada is trying to do what the people of Canada want. I don’t think the Harper government gives a damn about what Canadians want. Stephen Harper works for Corporate Canada, and he does what THEY want.

WE HAVE A POLITICAL SYSTEM THAT GIVES ALMOST TOTAL GOVERNMENTAL POWER TO ONE PERSON; THE PRIME MINISTER FEDERALLY AND THE PREMIERS PROVINCIALLY.

THIS IS THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF DEMOCRACY, AND AS LONG AS THE CORPORATIONS CAN CONTROL THESE FEW PEOPLE, THEY WILL CONTINUE TO RUN OUR COUNTRY.

IT IS FOLLY TO CONCENTRATE POWER LIKE THIS, AND WE HAVE TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.

These issues of ‘do we have a democracy’ and ‘do we have a free press’ are so big and so important that they are never mentioned by the corporate-owned-media, or the corporate politicians, and therefore they are seldom thought of by most Canadians.

But, Media and Democracy are fundamentally important issues, and we have to think about them and know about them and start to fix them up. Imagine the power the corporations can have when they control the power of government and they also control what we see, hear and read in the media they own, which is virtually every bit of big media in this country.

Our governments have been taken over to the point where we Canadians are basically irrelevant in terms of political power. Our governments no longer even pretend to represent us, they just do what Corporate Canada tells them to do.

If this was ‘working for us’ – and things were going well – then maybe it wouldn’t matter so much. But in fact the corporations have led us to the edge of financial, economic, social, and environmental disaster, and the only way we can save ourselves is to get rid of them and retake control of the direction of our nation. This is so serious that it is now a matter of life and death. Our lives, and our deaths…

Do we want our health care system destroyed? Well, it doesn’t really matter what we want, because we are no longer relevant. Do we want increasing homelessness and food banks, and the elimination of the middle class and a growing gap between rich and poor? Again, it doesn’t matter what we want, because our democracy is gone and we don’t matter. Do we want our planet destroyed? Well it looks like the corporations are quite willing to do even that, as long as it allows them to ‘maximize short-term profits’.

Our politicians routinely lie to us when they are ‘campaigning’, and when they get power they do whatever they want – or more importantly they do whatever they are TOLD by the corporate elites they work for. And the media routinely misinform us, lie to us, hide the truth, and keep us in the dark.

This is the Canada that we live in today. Canada is no longer a Democracy, WE ARE A CORPOCRACY …

What we have in Canada now is government OF the corporation, BY the corporation, and FOR the corporation. Corporate Canada basically runs our country for their own benefit, stealing everything that isn’t tied down, and putting it into their own pockets.

When the corporations want to pay lower taxes, their governments lower their taxes, and their media tell us ‘how good this is going to be’. When the corporations want the right to destroy our environment and poison us, the politicians give them the right and their media tells us it’s all safe. When the corporations want to murder us in order to maximize their profits – then murder is allowed. No one is punished and most of us never even hear about it.

For example, look at the Merck pain-killer drug Vioxx which killed about 5000 Canadians a dozen or so years ago. This was never a big media story even though thousands of our fellow citizens died – or were killed … or perhaps murdered – many of them completely unnecessarily because the problem was known by the company – and their politicians – and simply allowed to continue because there was still money to be made.

Why didn’t the media, which always pretends to care so much for us, report this? Why didn’t the politicians, whom we elect and pay and who are supposed to be working for us … why didn’t they do anything? Well they did do something, they swept it all under the rug.

This is the kind of thing that happens all the time because these people and corporations are allowed to do some very evil things to us over and over again, and never really have to pay a price.

We Canadians don’t matter, because we are irrelevant.
We aren’t asked and we aren’t told.
We aren’t even in the game anymore.
We are a joke in our own country.
This is the situation we are in today,
and it is definitely time for a change.
